Figuring out and living your identity 24/7 is a heavy burden. You’re told to shape your life around it, you must be very clear about it, and it will dictate your career success. I feel like a shapeshifter in the identity space. Trying on new versions of it as my life and career unfold around me. I’m not sure when it will feel static verse a work in progress and I working to make peace with that.
A short guide to accepting a fluctuating identity:
Let’s be really self-compassionate that life will throw you curveballs, experiences and opportunities that are going to require rapid growth and recalibration. It’s ok to not be ok, and it’s ok to not be sure who you are anymore. Both are valid.
Does identity have to be static and fixed? Who says you have to be a certain way, and who determines your value? Only you do.
Consider taking the free Barret’s Personal Values test and using that information to help create a value statement.
Your identity is not anyone else’s perception of you; it’s who you are, what you think, what you do and who you feel, and that’s what matters.
You are enough, and where you’re at is good enough for now. It’s ok to keep changing as you grow and find who you are - be patient with yourself.
